Perched on a hillock in West Bandra, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount is the oldest known church in Mumbai. Renowned as a Roman Catholic Church, it is most commonly known as the Mount Mary Church.
Constructed in 1640 and then rebuilt in 1761, the church is dedicated to ‘Virgin Mary’. Known for having Virgin Mary’s inexplicable healing powers, this ancient church draws lakhs of pilgrims and devotees every year. It is a common belief, that people who sincerely offer prayers here often get their desires and wishes fulfilled.
The religious structure looks magnificent, nestled on top of ‘Sunderbans Bandra’ hill at 262 feet above sea level, that overlooks the expansive Arabian Sea. People from all faiths, pay their visit to this 100-year-old church, which has an original statue from Portugal.
The church organises an eight-day annual feast called the ‘Feast of Mount Mary’ or the ‘Bandra Fair’ to celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary on 8 September. Tourists visiting Mumbai from all around the globe ensure to visit this renowned church, especially during the Bandra Fair.
You can take back wonderful memories of this fair, which is synonymous to a real carnival. Food stalls, amusement rides, street events, and shopping stalls are the usual scenes here during the fair. One can enjoy shopping for uniquely shaped candles, religious artefacts, wax figures of Virgin Mary and Goan sweets from several shopping stalls temporarily set up outside the church.
One can be a witness to a beautiful sunset, that spreads breath-taking magnificence in the already scenic environment of this church. Also, don’t forget to capture the amazing view of the 16th century statute of ‘Our Lady’ in your eyes, that looks majestic in its full glory, when the rays of the setting sun reflect its shine from it!
