Back in 1998, when Muruganantham saw his better-half in a dreadful situation because she was old rags in the name of sanitary pads, he decided to take the matters in his own hands. He created a prototype of sanitary pad that terribly failed. But, he did not lose hope. Rather, he tried using different materials and introduced a fresh prototype for the pads every month. Later, he asked few of the volunteers to try his prototype from a nearby medical college, since there was a month’s gap between each model tested by his wife. Even though, the female students agreed to use his prototype, they were shy to give him the precise feedback. Ultimately, he decided to test them himself.

Muruganantham took 2 years to discover the right material and another 4 years to find a right way to process it. As a result, he created an easy-to-use machine for making low-cost sanitary pads. His prototype machine came at just $950 as compared the imported machines, whose cost was more than $5,00,000. This empowered the women’s groups or schools to purchase this machine, as they could now, make their own sanitary pads and sell the excess. This created jobs for these rural women in India.

This is how a revolution was kick-started by Muruganantham, who was also awarded with Padma Shri by the former President Pranab Mukherjee. He sold 1,300 machines to 27 indian states. Of late, he even started out exporting these machines to other developing nations all around the globe.
