It’s fascinating how every year brings new discoveries that leaves the world mesmerized. This year, there have been at least 18,000 new species described in the encyclopedia. This is actually a big number but yes, it is true and the new categories have been introduced.
Here is the list of 5 new species that has been discovered over last 12 months by the taxonomists.
Gryffindor’s Hat(Eriovixia gryffindori)
This new spider specie was discovered by Mumbai researchers in the central western ghats in Karnataka. The spider is barely 2-7mm in length and has been scientifically named as Eriovixia gryffindori after the fictious wizard Godrick Gryffindor in the film Harry Potter because of its hat-shaped structure.
Rose-tinted katydid(Eulophophyllum kirki)
These specimens are beautifully colored insects which stand out in red and pink. They are also called as Malaysia’s new pink ladies. This rosy hued insects are females and the males look similar but are green colored and they look like leaves. They are scientifically named as Eulophophyllum kirki.
No eyes, four penises, and many legs (Illacme tobini)’
This new specie of millipede Illacme tobini has no eyes but has four penises and many legs. Its body armor houses 200 poison glands that express an unknown type of toxin and is covered in silk-secreting hairs. The specie was discovered in a cave of Sequoia National Park
Brazilian beauty (Potamotrygon rex)
Potamotrygon rex is a black stingray specie from the mid and upper rio Tocantins, Brazil. The concentrated yellow patterning of this creature, coupled with a length of up to 1.1 meters (3.6 feet) and a weight of 20 kilograms (44 pounds), has given this funky ray the title “King of Rays”.
The inescapable nightmare (Scolopendra cataracta)
Scolopendra cataracta is the first known amphibious centipede which grows up to 20 cms in length. It can scuttle and swim while the other centipede lives in the dry places. This species is unique among the multileg comrade.
